Local Government Reforms: TDC and LTPP

Local Government reforms: where to from here for Taupo District Council and the Lake Taupo Protection Project?

Lakes and Waterways public meeting

5.15pm - Thursday 16th July

Waiora House, Spa Road, Taupo

Current government reforms (i.e., to local government and to the RMA) continue apace, e.g., with Taupo District Council (TDC) now considering amalgamation (including four options; Taupo Turangi News, 9th July 2026). These reforms have the potential to impact on two areas of primary concern to LWAG, i.e., the Lake Taupo Protection Project (LTPT) and the Waikato River. TDC is now assessing amalgamation and Councillors will vote on options 21st July 2026.

Our concerns are numerous, e.g.: who will ‘hold’ the LTPT legislation? Who will oversee nitrogen discharge from TDC wastewater treatment plants to the lake? How will agricultural-sector consents for lake protection (i.e., contracts for long-term nitrogen reduction and consents for Taupo catchment farm practice) be maintained? How will flood protection in the Lower Waikato River be effected?

This meeting aims to discuss the LTPT and the Waikato River in the context of amalgamation and RMA reforms. Specifically, the meeting aims to: collate issues, identify possible solutions, and provide advice to TDC.

The LWAG AGM will follow.
